AUSTIN, Texas
A wealthy Dallas dentist who spent lavishly while running unsuccessfully for Congress last year is challenging longtime incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.
David Alameel spent millions while competing in a crowded 2012 Democratic primary race for the seat in a new congressional district eventually won by U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Fort Worth. He's also a former Cornyn donor.
The Democratic Party of Texas said it received Alameel's paperwork Wednesday. He had been promising to enter the race for several days.
Elected in 2002, Cornyn is now the Senate's No. 2 Republican.

(112,150 posts)Alameel has made a lot of contributions to GOP candidates in his past and doesn't appear to be progressive. He probably thinks that running as a Democrat is an easier road to get into office. If he wins the nomination, then he hopes to get swept into office by straight party ballots.

(32,017 posts)Hes given $700,000 in the last six years to Democrats at the federal level. In Texas, hes spread the love.
He gave Attorney General Greg Abbott, the GOP front-runner for governor, $165,000 from 2002 to 2008 though he also gave $30,000 last year to Abbotts Democratic rival, state Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth.

Im not your typical Democrat, Alameel said. Im conservative in many ways and have worked with both parties. Im very pro-military, very pro-national security.
Not my cup of tea, but this decision will be made by Texas Democrats, not me.
