The spirit moved her: Why Carolyn Oliver gave Wendy Davis a million dollar donation

Dr. Carolyn Oliver

“I put myself through college, and she as well,” said Oliver, the first-born of seven children from Washington, D.C., who came to Texas at 19.

“I am grateful that I did not have anything that set me back, that would have kept me from doing the things that I’ve done,” said Oliver, who is both a medical doctor and a lawyer, with a degree from South Texas College of Law.

She thinks the state needs more “moderate” leadership, and one more in tune with what she said is Texans’ desire to help each other out.

“I think big business is great, but there’s got to be a balance. There’s a sweet spot somewhere that I just don’t think we’ve got in Texas.”

“I was just inspired to give, and I trust my intuition, and, in particular, I believe in fairness and trying to make our society a better and fairer society,” she said. “I believe that our Texas government doesn’t represent the fairness that I think Texans feel.”

Dr. Oliver also would like to see a course on business ethics being integrated into the medical school curriculum. The article is worth reading in depth. In addition, Dr. Oilver is the author of Cautious Care: a Guide for Patients, which advocates more patient involvement in medical care.
