Attorney General Greg Abbott says no need to review Texas executions

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said Wednesday that he saw no need to change or review the state’s execution policies in the wake of a botched lethal injection in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Republican Gov. Mary Fallin Tuesday ordered a full review of her state’s execution procedures after something went wrong with the lethal injection given to death row inmate Clayton Lockett. It was reported that Lockett was writhing on a gurney after the first of thee injections were made. The process was stopped and he later died of a heart attack.

Abbott said it was appropriate for Fallin the review the incident, which could have been caused by vein failure.

But he said there were no lessons to be learned in Texas.

“We monitor our system very carefully to make sure we never have happen in Texas what happened in Oklahoma,” Abbott said. “I have no indication or evidence or reason for concern that we will have happen in Texas what happened in Oklahoma.”
