Petition to “Save Bill Powers” (Univ. of Texas President) gets almost 9,000 signatures
A petition promoted by UT Austins alumni association, Texas Exes, in support of university president Bill Powers has received almost 9,000 signatures.
Reports surfaced Friday that UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa told Powers to resign before Thursdays meeting of the Board of Regents or be fired.
Texas Exes new president, former Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, sent an email to alumni over the weekend confirming the accuracy of reports that Powers was offered an ultimatum.
A forced resignation or firing would be a travesty for UT. It would cause further tension with legislators regarding UT System, would compound unrest among faculty, students, and alumni, and invoke serious harm to the institutions reputation in the national spotlight, Hutchinson said in the email.
