Five arrested at abortion rights protest at UT

Five opponents of a Texas law they say has led to the closure of numerous abortion facilities were arrested Wednesday afternoon during a protest near the University of Texas campus.

The women are members of Stop Patriarchy, a group that gathered about noon at Guadalupe Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets to block the traffic as an act of civil disobedience.

“We came here because this is a place where thousands of people come together to learn about the world,” said Joan Hirsch, a group member.

The arrested protesters were booked at the Travis County Jail and have been charged with obstructing a highway or other passage way, a class B misdemeanor, police said. Their names were not released.
