Critics challenge Texas' new social studies textbooks

The Texas Freedom Network, an education advocacy and watchdog group, fired the first warning shot Wednesday. It challenged several of the books under consideration for U.S. history, government, world history and other social studies courses.

The criticism came a week before board members hold a public hearing on the proposed materials. It must approve new textbooks and electronic books, which will be distributed to schools next fall.

“Extensive reviews of these textbooks show that they suffer from many of the same serious flaws that plague” the social studies curriculum standards the board approved in 2010, the advocacy group said.
