I am volunteering with the Texas Democratic Party and the DNC Voter Expansion Project on a project called the voter id assistant program where the TDP is training people to help voters obtain the needed voter id to vote. You can volunteer for this project at this address http://act.txdemocrats.org/page/s/texas-voter-expansion-project
If you know anyone who needs help getting an id, call the Texas Democratic Party Hotline 1-844-TXVOTES (1-844-898-6837) or e-mail voterid@txdemocrats.org We are also coordinating with Battleground Texas on voter protection issues.
If you can get a voter to go to their local county clerk's office during business hours, any voter who was born in Texas can get a birth certificate from any county clerk's office for $2 or $3 and use that birth certificate to get an Election Identification Certificate with two other pieces of id such as a voter registration card.
We need to help as many people as possible vote. If you e-mail the above address or call the hot line you will find help. Again, I am working on this project and I plan to help as many people as possible to get ids.

(145,130 posts)First, the DOJ was one of the plaintiffs in the Texas voter id case and did an amazing job in this case. The DOJ provided some muscle in this case and many of the key expert witnesses
Second, due to the Shelby County case (the case that gutted the voting rights act), the DOJ does not have the power to send in federal poll watchers into Texas. In prior yeas the DOJ sent in federal election observers because Texas was a "covered jurisdiction" under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. The Shelby County case caused Texas to no longer be a "covered jurisdiction" and so the DOJ does not have the authority to send in election monitors or observers.
If the trial court is allowed to continue its process, the trial court could "bail in" Texas under section 3 of the Voting Rights Act which would make Texas a covered jurisdiction again and allow the DOJ to send poll watchers and force Texas to pre-clear all election law changes.
The Obama administration in general and Attorney General Holder in particular has done a great deal in Texas. The DOJ played a key role in the Texas voter id case and AG Holder is doing what he can to protect the vote.

(145,130 posts)the concept is simple. The State of Texas claimed that every one can get ids and so we will try to take the State up on this offer.
As part of the litigation, the State of Texas offered some changes that it had originally refused. I spoke at a couple of town halls on this issue for a congressman and at these town halls the Texas Department of Public safety was asked to provide mobile units to helo voters get ids. To look better in the litigation, the DPS is now offering mobile units.
Second, the State of Texas adopted regulations to allow county clerks to issue reduced price birth certificates for people born in Texas if these voters go to their local county clerk's office during business hours. I am going to find some voters and take them up on this offer.
This is a stop gap program but it is better than doing nothing

Sincere thanks.

(145,130 posts)It is not hard to sign up for the voter id assistant program online. The course is on the TDP website and after listening to Sondra Haltom who works for the DNC and the TDP, you take a little quiz on line and then you are a voter id assistant. Sondra can then give you access to lists of voters who need help and the forms and materials needed to help. A large part of the work can be done at home by contacting voters and making sure that they know they need ids and how to get these ids.
