Reports: One dead, one severely injured in Interstate 35 bridge collapse in Salado

Update at 12:50 p.m.: The Killeen Daily Herald reports that one person was killed and another taken by helicopter ambulance to a hospital after Thursday's bridge collapse.

The Herald says crews were working on the bridge when an 18-wheeler passing underneath struck two concrete beams, which fell and crushed the truck's cab and a sedan.

Original story:

Emergency crews are responding to a reported bridge collapse along an interstate in Central Texas.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Department says the accident happened late Thursday morning along Interstate 35 in Salado, about 40 miles north of Austin.

Lt. Donnie Adams says traffic has been halted in both directions. Adams says he didn’t immediately have additional details on possible injuries or what caused the accident.

I hope TexasTowelie can keep us informed of causes of the collapse. Those of us in other states may not hear much about this incident.

A truck hit a support column. The bridge that collapsed is on a farm to market road connecting Stillhouse Hollow Lake west of I-35. The highway department is expanding the bridges throughout that area. I've been on that road a few times since it is about 25 mile north of where I went to college.

Accident at FM2484 overpass, mile marker 286. Cab of 18 wheeler and another vehicle are below the collapse.

Suggested detours are to use State Highway 195 to Killeen and US 190 to Temple (to the west of I-35) or State Highway 95 to Temple (to the east of I-35).
