Support for Amarillo council candidate Burkett wavers after racist posts surface on Facebook

Leaders of two organizations backing Amarillo City Council candidate Randy Burkett expressed concern Thursday over racially charged posts on his personal Facebook account.

A post from July 2013 on Burkett’s account said, “When OJ got off on murdering two whites, you didn’t see all the white people busting glass, marching, rioting etc. But it seems anytime a black person gets killed by a white person, here comes Al Sharpton preaching civil rights and a lot of blacks start tearing (expletive) up.”

Burkett said he did not recall whether he posted some of the messages and said as many as five other people handle his account. He said he does not think the posts accurately reflect his world view.

“If you’re asking me if I’m a racist, I’m certainly not,” Burkett said. “That would be a better question for Frank White and Elisha Demerson. Ask them if Randy Burkett’s a racist. They’ll tell you I’m not.

“I played college ball ... some of my best friends are black and Hispanic and Asians. ... It’s really an insult for somebody to call me a racist with all the good I do in the world.”
