Iraq-born Mesquite man arrested by FBI, which alleges he pledged allegiance to ISIS
A 37-year-old Mesquite man who pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was arrested by the FBI Thursday and charged with lying to federal authorities.
The U.S. Attorneys Office says Bilal Abood is an Iraq-born naturalized U.S. citizen who migrated to the United States in 2009. He was in court today and will appear again tomorrow, during a detention hearing in downtown Dallas.
According to the complaint, which you will find below, on March 29 of last year he tried to travel out of the country out of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Officials wouldnt let him on the plane, however, and when questioned about his travel plans, he allegedly told FBI agents he was merely going to Iraq to visit family.
During a subsequent interview, agents asked Abood again about his attempted travel specifically asking if he intended to go to Syria to fight, and Abood stated that was not his intent, says the release from the U.S. Attorney. Later in that interview, however, Abood admitted that his intent on March 29, 2013, was to go to Syria to fight against the Assad regime, claiming he wanted to fight with the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
