Longview mayor issues proclamation in favor of LGBT event; hates it

When members and allies of the LGBT community gather next week at Heritage Plaza, they will do so with the support of the city of Longview.

Mayor Andy Mack has issued a proclamation declaring June LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Pride Month in Longview.

The proclamation, which is already signed by Mack, is dated June 13 — the day of the second annual LGBTQ Pride Festival in Longview.

Mack also said approving any proclamation did not mean he personally agreed with its message.

"I am not advocating for anyone or anything. This does not coincide with my personal beliefs. It does not, but everyone has a right to assemble in an orderly manner. They have the right to express themselves," Mack said. "I don't get to pick and choose as the mayor who I represent and who I don't represent."
