Rep. Pete Sessions to run for majority whip, third-ranking House leadership spot
WASHINGTONRep. Pete Sessions, R-Dallas, is running for House majority whip, the third-most powerful position in House leadership.
Our conference was at a crossroads in 2009, and this upcoming leadership election provides us with yet another crossroads, wrote Sessions in a letter to Republican colleagues. I am contacting you this morning because, if given the opportunity, I plan to run for Majority Whip so we can work together and put our conference on the right path to fight for our conservative principles on behalf of the American people.
Sessions has served in Congress since 1997 and chairs the influential Rules Committeethe legislative gatekeeper of the House. As chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, he orchestrated the GOPs 2010 takeover of the House of Representatives.
I know how to build a successful member-driven institution because thats exactly what we did at the NRCC and what we have done at the Rules Committee, wrote Sessions. Our next Whip needs to demonstrate bold leadership that pays attention to process and the people involved in that process. Our next Whip also needs to unite and strengthen our conference based upon the ideas of all of our members.
