Sinton special needs student elected homecoming queen

Sinton High School homecoming queen Hannah Moody poses with parents Michael and Alice Moody after being crowned at homecoming ceremonies right before Sinton's victory over La Vernia 48-23.

SINTON – Hannah Moody was born without eyesight, but that didn’t stop Sinton High School from letting her see how much they care about her before the homecoming game Friday.

A student in the special needs program at the school, 18-year-old Hannah was nominated for homecoming queen this year by her 14-year-old sister Haley and her friends.

The push to name her queen took off in a hurry and Hannah won by a landslide.

“I’m really just so pleased with our kids at the school. They’re really amazing having included a special needs child in there,” Hannah’s mother Alice said.

The road to homecoming queen wasn’t an easy one for the Moody family. The eldest of three children, Hannah was born prematurely at 25 weeks.

She was particularly underdeveloped in her retinal area and was diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity, a disease that has five stages of severity and can cause permanent blindness in the most severe cases.

For special needs students give me hope that the future isn't as bleak as I thought.
