Texas

I'm in Florida, so I feel your pain. Way too many DU'ers find such glee in bashing an entire state, when they need to bash ONE person or ONE group.

(4,762 posts)There's a lot to love about Texas. But its political culture is toxically venal and mean. I moved out at 18, go back only when I have to, and took the best things about the place (music, food, humor, toughness, and joie de vive) with me in my exile.

(62,534 posts)since it the population exploded in the last 15 years, Austin is affectionately getting the nickname of "Dallas South" or Houston west".
It's certainly nothing like it once was.

(1,728 posts)I moved to NC when I was 20. I always said I would never come back. But 22 years later I did because of family obligations. I have been back here for almost 3 years and almost everyday I am reminded why I left.

(3 posts)I too am from your hometown and left. Now back and looking to get out, this time for good. Texas has worked hard for the reputation it has, both good and bad. Canyon was a Sundown Town and a lot of those attitudes continue to exist here, which is unfortunate.

(22,945 posts)Remember Tom Delay's K-Street Project? The mid-decade gerrymandered re-districting that gave Republicans a majority in the state? Delay's involvement of the FFA and the FBI in trying to prevent Democrats from leaving the state to prevent a quorum? The revelation that the vaunted Texas approach to education was based on fraud? The state's record on the death penalty, gun rights, LGBT rights, education (remember all those textbook issues?), abortion, health care, etc is dismal. Don't forget George W. Bush. And then there is Rick "Oops" Perry...

(29,414 posts)We are simply asking our so-called intellectual and fellow Dems to show some respect. If that's too hard, then don't expect it in return.
Of course it would also be nice if it were required on DU for everyone to post what state/region/country they hail from so that the rest of us can think up imaginative insults for the places they call Home.

(29,414 posts)Much as I detest the Word Police on DU, sometimes they get it right. Skinner would do well to put those two "nicknames" on the forbidden list as well.
"Texasperated" I embrace wholeheartedly, because it's true of us Texas Dems and it's funny to boot
Way too many DUers also forego critical thinking in order to bash whole regions, relying solely on either a one-time visit or worse, bad news reports from the region.
I truly believe that some DUers are so rude naturally that they don't realize when they are being condescending to people, dissing them and their home, and then acting all surprised when good folks (no matter how they have voted in their lives) return the rudeness tenfold.
So, thank you, Steve, for the sentiment and hugs. It is appreciated by this native

(7,686 posts)I am ashamed of our once Great State. We have the worst politics in the nation. The GOP has destroyed this state. Shameful and backwards thinking. I live in rural Texas and it is the absolute worst. Uneducated and good ole boys galore!
