Confederate flag rally made its way through Amarillo

Roughly 100 people loaded into trucks and cars to drive through Amarillo on Sunday, flying flags of the Confederate States of America amid escalating tensions between the black community and law enforcement.

The event was called the Second Annual Fly Your Flag rally and was organized by the Freedom Riders group. The group is not affiliated with the civil rights group, the Freedom Riders, that successfully fought segregation on buses in the South in the 1960s and counted Rosa Parks among its members.

James Roberts, the founder of the Freedom Riders and organizer of the rally, said that the event was about unity.

“All of the conflict with the flag, it has nothing to do with racism,” Roberts said. “I think it shows that we can come together as one.”
