Muslim group calls for hate crime investigation after bacon smeared on Galveston restaurant

The local branch of an Islamic organization called Sunday for a hate crime investigation after a Muslim-owned business in Galveston was targeted by vandals.

Asad Khan found the front of his Post Office Street restaurant covered in bacon last weekend, just days after discovering bacon grease smeared on the front door handles.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations-Houston fired back Sunday in a press release.

"Bias is the only reasonable explanation for the use of bacon in vandalism targeting a Muslim-owned business, and law enforcement authorities should keep that possible hate motive in mind when investigating this case and in bringing charges against the alleged perpetrator," said CAIR-Houston Executive Director Mustafaa Carroll.

Galveston Strong: Stand Up to Hate

There was an unfortunate exhibition of bigotry and Islamophobia at a local restaurant in Galveston, Zaza Bar & Bites. The owner, Asad Khan, found his restaurant covered in bacon last Sunday. It is obvious that this was an attempt to intimidate Asad because of his Muslim identity.

We, the people of Galveston, will not tolerate any acts of hate toward any group of people, and especially not toward our small business owners.

Please come show your support on Thursday, December 8th, by purchasing a meal at Zaza during business hours (4-11PM).
The Muslim Medical Association and Student National Medical Association at UTMB will be going collectively at 7:00PM. We will be bringing a poster, so please feel free to sign it in solidarity.
