Sheriff's deputy dead after vehicle swallowed by sinkhole in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO A Bexar County Sheriff's deputy died after the car she was traveling in fell into a massive sinkhole on the Southwest Side Sunday evening, officials confirmed this afternoon.
Emergency crews recovered the body of Dora Linda (Solis) Nishihara, a part-time BCSO deputy, just before 1 p.m. from her vehicle, which was submerged in 12 feet of water in the sinkhole in the 8400 block of Quintana Road, officials said.
Fire Chief Charles Hood said crews worked the scene as a "body recovery" rather than a rescue early Monday. The sinkhole, which swallowed two cars, is the diameter of the street and was likely caused by a large sewer line rupture Sunday evening, officials said.
"We are heartbroken to confirm Deputy Dora Linda (Solis) Nishihara passed away after her car fell into a sinkhole Sunday," BCSO spokesman James Kieth said in a release.
