Academy Sports + Outdoors given namesake to Katy ISD stadium complex

The Katy ISD board has agreed to sell the naming rights for the complex that includes the district's future football stadium to Academy Sports + Outdoors, the sporting goods giant that has its headquarters in Katy.

The school district and corporation have agreed to a 10-year sponsorship contract worth a total of $2.5 million. In selling the naming rights for the complex, which includes a 12,000-seat stadium now under construction and the adjacent Jack Rhodes Memorial Stadium, Katy ISD joins a growing number of school districts nationwide to sell the naming rights of its sports facilities to gain revenue.

The complex will be named Academy Sports + Outdoors Student Activities Complex.

"Academy's home and headquarters have been in Katy since 1990, so I think it's just a natural fit," said Katy ISD board member Brian Michalsky, the chairman of a community-based committee formed by the board that worked on the issue. "It's more than naming a facility. There's a commitment to leverage that relationship to the community and district, which ultimately benefits our students. The uniqueness of having that stadium complex, I think, was very appealing. Academy saw the value. I think both sides got good value for what we're doing here."

After spending more than $70 million on a stadium, it's probably a good thing to recoup some of the expenses by selling the naming rights.
