Frisco man guilty of driving to Illinois to murder his grandmother for $400,000 inheritance

A Frisco man was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder in the death of his 85-year-old grandmother in Illinois in 2014.

Rich Allan Schmelzer, 44, drove from Texas to the Chicago area to stab Mildred "Dodie" Darrington to death in order to inherit hundreds of thousands of dollars, prosecutors said.

When relatives refused to loan him money, prosecutors said, Schmelzer transferred money from his grandmother's credit cards.
