Texas lawmakers release budget proposals

AUSTIN – The Texas House and Senate on Tuesday unveiled their versions of what is expected to be a bare-bones state budget, but the early House plan would spend about $8 billion more over two years than the initial draft filed in the upper chamber.

Both plans for the two-year spending cycle that begins Sept. 1 would boost funding for public schools and for the troubled agency charged with protecting children in foster care and those at risk of abuse and neglect.

And both plans included some disappointment for the Texas Department of Public Safety, which last year requested more than $1 billion for a controversial border-security program.

The leaders of both legislative houses described the early drafts as a good starting point for the 2018-19 budget process.
