Maker of feral hog poison pulling product from Texas

The maker of Kaput Feral Hog Bait, facing mounting opposition to its product and the threat of lawsuits, has withdrawn its registration of the warfarin-based poison in the state of Texas.

“Under the threat of many lawsuits, our family owned company cannot at this time risk the disruption of our business and continue to compete with special interests in Texas that have larger resources to sustain a lengthy legal battle,” according to a press release from Colorado-based Scimetrics Ltd. Corp.

The press release does not identify the individuals or organizations that may have threatened to take legal action.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller in February authorized the use of Kaput for dealing with the booming wild hog population. The Waco-based Texas Farm Bureau applauded the move, saying feral hogs have become a costly nuisance that bulldozes crops and damages public land.

1. Is it true that domestic hogs/pigs "devolve" into feral pigs

if they're released into the wild, sort of like a porcine version of "Call of the Wild"?

My knowledge about pigs/hogs involves three areas: pork, ham and bacon.

Okay, I also dissected a fetal pig in biology and I also was present one time when a young hog was castrated (since it affects the quality of the meat).

2. What gets to me is hunters travel

half way across the world to hunt "exotic" animals that they kill from a distance with a scope on open savanna. Real men should be heading to Texas instead of shooting Cecil. The meat from these hogs can be eaten, and they are probably some of the most challenging animals to hunt (work from cover, can kill your dogs, armed with tusks, and very smart).

3. A Libertarian challenge

Land holders charge hunters to hunt hogs on their land. This land essentially serves a game reserve for hog populations that do not respect borders. Should a land holder be held liable for hogs who come and go off of their land if they destroy crops, livestock, or vegetation on another land holders property?

5. One limitation I see is that for the hogs to

enter the commercial food stream, they need to be captured and slaughtered under controlled conditions. I wonder if hunters could be certified to allow them to kill and process the meat themselves (or at least dress it to be taken to the butcher).
