Construction of Texas A&M-Kingsville's new $60 million music building set for June

The Texas A&M University System board of regents approved the construction of a $60 million facility for its Kingsville campus.

The construction of the new Texas A&M University-Kingsville Education Complex and Music Building was approved during the April 27 board of regents meeting. Construction is set to begin in June. The complex will include a 400-500 seat performance hall and music education spaces, as well as general teaching space, faculty offices, studios and facility support space. The building, which will be located at the corner of Santa Gertrudis and Armstrong streets, will become the new focal point for the southeast entrance to the campus.

The Texas Legislature approved funding for the project in June 2015, a university news release states. The music program has outgrown its current facilities and a new music building is critical to maintaining the program’s accreditation status, the release states.

According to the university's legislative appropriations request for fiscal years 2016 and 2017, an accreditation report from the National Association of Schools of Music states that the university's accreditation "will be in jeopardy" without the improvements.
