House bathroom bill stalled, but effort to restrict restroom access is far from over
AUSTIN — The House’s “bathroom bill” appears stalled for good, but Republican backers of restricting restroom access have lots of time and plenty of ways to keep the issue alive in the final weeks of the legislative session.
“I still think the concept has some legs,” said Rep. Ron Simmons, R-Carrollton, who authored House Bill 2899. “It’s still an issue the state needs to address, for sure.”
Simmons said he was “disappointed” by the fate of his bill, which would have undone local anti-discrimination ordinances protecting transgender Texans’ access to public restrooms. His proposal never made it out of committee, and due to House deadlines this week, realistically is dead as of Monday.
But it’s far too soon to declare the effort to pass some kind of bathroom legislation over. With three weeks before the 2017 legislative session ends, there are still a few ways Texas could become the second state to pass a law regulating restroom use based on biological sex.
