A Houston-area school is apologizing after a seventh-grade student was given an award that named her "most likely to become a terrorist."
The student got the certificate during a mock awards ceremony, which followed the official awards ceremony at Anthony Aguirre Junior High, the school said in a prepared statement.
"As principal, I want to assure all students, parents and community members that these award statements and ideals are NOT representative of the Aguirre Vision Mission, and educational goals for its students," the statement said.
Lizeth Villanueva told Click2Houston.com that she was given the award Tuesday in her AVID class, an advanced learning program to prepare students for college.

(112,159 posts)I know that most of the awards are either hurtful or spiteful and that has been going on for decades. In the will that was read at the senior prom, my sister supposedly bequeathed her "tight" sweaters to another young woman known for her ample cleavage.
When I graduated high school, I supposedly left "a pot of gold" with the inference that I was dealing drugs which wasn't true.
All of the crap about mock awards and senior wills needs to stop. I hope that the junior high cracks down on the nonsense.

(1,865 posts)I didn't realize this was a "tradition". I think that only makes it more sad & discouraging.. Wonder just how many dear Babies have been scarred & traumatized by this "tradition".
Thank YOU for educating me, & US.
WE need to know.
