Confederate memorial stands alone in Williamson County; historical plaque effort fails

GEORGETOWN -- The Confederate Soldiers and Sailors memorial on the courthouse lawn will get no plaque.

At least not this year.

The plaque would have served as an interpretive historical marker for the controversial statue.

Courageous Conversations, a Georgetown group focusing on local issues of race, proposed that an application for the plaque be submitted to the Texas Historical Commission.

Lou Snead, a retired Presbyterian minister, told commissioners Tuesday the statue symbolizes slavery and white supremacy and needs a historical marker to put it in the proper historical context.

Gonzales Texas, in a special place called "confederate Square," in the middle of downtown. It is close to the tallest structure in town. And I don't expect anything will be done about that one either.
