Seeking to play to his strengths, Andrew White brought his Democratic campaign for governor to Austin on Tuesday to unveil an economic development plan intended to create 1 million jobs in the next five years.
The plan, which seeks to take advantage of a robust oil industry and emerging technology, offered White a chance to compare his experience as a Houston businessman to that of Gov. Greg Abbott, whom White repeatedly characterized as a 22-year career politician more focused on divisive social issues such as limits on transgender bathroom use than economic innovation.
But White also sought separation from his opponent in the May 22 Democratic primary runoff, Lupe Valdez, saying his status as a moderate offers the best chance of unseating Abbott, a popular Republican in a state dominated by Republican voters.
We can end the extremism in Texas this November because moderate Democrats are winning in red states all over the nation.
Texas can be next, White said. We must pick the candidate who can raise money and build a team, the candidate who understands complicated policy and can articulate his vision for the future.

(145,554 posts)I am torn between the two. Andrew can probably raise more money but Greg is sitting on a war chest of $40+ million already. Lupe is a good speaker and I like her as a person.

(25,551 posts)I don't know if Andrew can win, but I'm afraid Lupe may avoid debating Abbott. She won't debate Andrew.
I'm concerned about down ballot races. We've got Steve Kling running against Donna Campbell. Kling is an excellent candidate, but unless we have someone who is serious at the top, I'm afraid the Democrats will be marginalized. Lupe went in on December 7th. Plan Parenthood maligned Andrew, then Lupe showed up at the last minute.

(145,554 posts)He was really not impressed with Lupe. White is a business man and can probably raise some money.
BTW, Juanita Jean and her husband are supporting Lupe. There are others in the Texas state party who like Lupe over White. There is some hope that having a Hispanic name on the top of the ballot may help.

(42,641 posts)If successful, the program would increase demand for Texas fuel, adding jobs in exploration, construction, engineering and other related fields, White said.
Just what the world needs. An increased demand for petroleum based fuels.

(112,417 posts)I don't see how anyone distinguishes Texas fuel from Everywhere Else fuel. Yes, there are different types of fuel (West Texas Intermediate, Brent, etc.) that vary by sulfur content and other characteristics that affect how easily it is refined. However overall, oil is oil.

(42,641 posts)I understand the idea of making a state based appeal, but Texas is one state of 50, and a tiny fraction of the earth. Flooding and general sea level rise will affect every shoreline.
