Abbott's school safety plan includes few gun restrictions

DALLAS (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday called for schools to have more armed personnel and said they should put greater focus on spotting student mental health problems but he proposed only a few small restrictions on guns following a shooting at a high school near Houston that left 10 people dead.

The Republican and staunch gun-rights supporter released a 43-page report following three days of mostly closed-door meetings last week organized with school district officials, shooting survivors and groups on both sides of the gun-control debate, among others.

The recommendations are voluntary and some would require changes to state laws that would need approval from the Legislature, which doesn’t come back into session until 2019. School districts wishing to make some of the changes could begin doing so, such as sending staff for free gun training this summer.

The lack of major gun control measures is not surprising in a state that embraces its gun-friendly reputation and has more than 1.2 million people licensed to carry handguns.

Only 0.3819% of total CHL holders. You are looking in the wrong place for problems.

I give two s**** about how many people were arrested in Texas for whatever. This post is what they're trying to do to prevent school shootings and they start with gun training.

I'm not going to get into a discussion with this with you or an argument or anything. You're free to believe whatever you want I'm free to believe whatever I want and we're not going to agree so I'm not going to waste my breath on you. Have a nice day.

Your “1.2 million problems” statement is a problem. Why turn off potential voters?

To obtain a Texas CHL you must be 21 years of age (military 18), a legal resident, free of convictions and pass a background check. CHL holders are eligible voters. All the CHL holders I know are registered.

There are some 15.2 million registered voters in Texas as of 2018. So, the CHL holders constitute 7.89% of the total - a sizable block. You can not dismiss CHL holders as a Republican block. Many gun owners, and CHLs, are Democrats or independents.

CHLs are a small part of TExas gun owners. So the risk of needless voter loss is even greater.

None of the school shooters has held a CHL. Statistics show that CHLs are law abiding. If you doubt this Check the TX DPS homepage.

So we need to look for the actual factors behind school shooters. Background checks need to be improved. Storage requirements must be mandated. And we need to improve physical security at schools. School police have been shown effective in stopping shooters. And n end to be provided,

I have no illusions that you will agree with these facts. I do not care. This will be seen as merely a gun defense. It is not. I am just pointing out that we do no t have enough votes to needlessly alienate voters.

Please enjoy your day. No need to respond. We have our both taken our positions.
