Texas State identifies 4 students arrested; Wednesday fracas exposes campus rift
SAN MARCOS -- After a right-wing groups planned appearance at Texas State University on Wednesday devolved into a mess of confusion that ended with four students of color arrested by campus police, officials and students gave divergent descriptions of the fracas.
The group, Texas Nomads SAR, never showed, but tensions still ran high as groups of conservatives and counterprotesters sparred with each other near the statue of stallions in the Quad, designated as a free speech zone on campus. Mena Yasmine, a university sophomore, said during the confrontation, a woman grabbed a Make America Great Again hat off a students head, and went to throw it away.
University Police Chief Laurie Clouse said officers characterized the move as a theft, and they placed arrested the student.
The student refused multiple directives and was then detained with the intention of being given a ticket for theft, Clouse said. The student was later arrested after providing a false identity to the police.
