House Democrats, LGBTQ Caucus kill 'Save Chick-fil-A' bill
AUSTIN -- Kicking off a late-session scramble by religious conservatives, Democrats in the Texas House used a parliamentary maneuver to kill a religious liberty bill that was filed after San Antonio political leaders rejected Chick-fil-A as an airport vendor, citing the companys legacy of anti-LGBTQ behavior.
The successful point of order by Rep. Julie Johnson, D-Carrollton, one of five members of the House LGBTQ Caucus, killed House Bill 3172 before Thursdays midnight deadline to pass legislation in the lower chamber.
Hopefully, today is the day discrimination against LGBT Texans dies in the Texas House, Johnson said. This was a distraction, and I am thrilled that we were able to end it this way.
Attention quickly shifted to the Senate, where supporters hoped to revive a similar bill that has wallowed, untouched, in a committee.
