City of Palestine asks Union Pacific to prove local employment

City officials have asked Union Pacific to prove they are employing enough local workers to meet its contractual obligations to the city.

Mayor Steve Presley expects to see documents on UP's local workforce by mid-June, including a preliminary report next week.

“They say they meet the numbers,” Presley told the Herald-Press Monday. “They're sending us the actual count of positions. We'll have to see what they send.”

Meeting with Palestine city officials Monday, Union Pacific said the railroad continues to meet its contractual obligations to employ a certain number of Palestine workers – even after laying off more than 30 local workers last month
