Abbott says Biden will fade and Trump will win Texas

by Jonathan Tilove

When I interviewed Gov. Greg Abbott for his take on the just completed legislative session, I noted that with Donald Trump up for reelection, some competitive congressional seats and control of the Texas House on the line, 2020 should be a pretty spectacular year in Texas politics.

“It should be,” the governor said. “It’s shaping up.”

Abbott won’t be on the ballot, but he’s taking a keen interest in how the presidential race might play out in Texas, which, based on early polls, could be close in a state that hasn’t seen a close contest for president since Bob Dole beat Bill Clinton by 5 percentage points in 1996.

“Here’s an unknown factor,” Abbott continued. “We’re seeing something that I have predicted. And that is that (former Vice President Joe) Biden is going to fall. If Biden falls, I think Democrats will have trouble in Texas. He’s not one of these off-the-deep-end leftists who has already adopted the leftist agenda. But in order to win the nomination, he’s increasingly having to take positions that are kind of contrary to where he’s been, like suddenly moving away from the Hyde Amendment, things like that.

I'll also enjoy rubbing it in to some of my Republican relatives.

If Democrats make substantial showings in Texas and Arizona it could change the political calculus for presidential elections. The states in the Southwest rarely see any presidential contenders campaign in their states.
