More than 200 loose cows create roadside rodeo across two SETX towns

Ranchers from across Southeast Texas worked Wednesday to herd some 200 cows that got loose in Stowell in the early morning, scattering themselves across two towns and two highways.

As of Wednesday night, Chambers County sheriff’s deputies and cowhands were still searching woods and county roads for 35 head of cattle still on the run.

Debbie Edwards, co-owner of the ranch from which the cows broke free, said something appeared to spook the herd of 231 that had been penned up for vaccinations and branding, causing them to break through a wooden fence around 3 a.m.

Area ranchers have gathered in the area with horses, horses and a fellow rancher’s helicopter to find and return the stray cows.
