I grew up in England and the midwest and was confused, I asked, you did it or you are going to do it? I also remember a Texan asking me if I had a PIN which also confused me, until I realized they actually were needing a PEN.

I now speak mostly General American, but I can tell you from listening to myself on tape that it's really hard to completely get rid of those vowels that turn into diphthongs. You can shorten them so it's not as obvious, but it's really hard to make them entirely go away. I mean, you can still tell Dan Rather is from Texas, right?
