Austin school district to close campuses indefinitely

The Austin school district will close all 129 campus buildings it owns for an indefinite period of time to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Superintendent Paul Cruz announced Friday to teachers.

The details of the plan were not immediately clear Friday afternoon, when Cruz sent the email. Cruz assured teachers that the district would compensate them through the end of their contract or through the end of the school year.

The Austin district will continue the school year with virtual learning, which starts formally on Monday.

“Our students and their families will successfully remain engaged through continuous learning,” Cruz said in an email to parents, who were notified about 45 minutes after teachers.
