Fact check: Texas congressman touts product, says it kills coronavirus for 2 weeks

The claim: “Health care workers go through a misting tent going into the hospital and it kills the coronavirus completely dead not only right then, but any time in the next 14 days that the virus touches anything that’s been sprayed it is killed.” — U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler.

Gohmert made the comment as he discussed a powder that he said is already in use in Germany. He added that he is trying to get a similar product from an Arizona-based company “fast-tracked” in the United States.

PolitiFact ruling: Pants on Fire. No such product seems to exist and no similar product is in use in Germany. There are no products currently in use as disinfecting agents in the United States that come close to meeting the description Gohmert offered.

We have people often confusing how a virus works with living bacteria and then touting something antibiotic.

From what I understand, viruses are strange buggers. Technically, they are not alive, but dormant and ready to be activated by interaction with cells where they inject their RNA and that converts the cell into a virus factory.

So, you don't "kill" it in dead, you use whatever means to inactivate its potential to spread and activate in a host. You can "destroy" them, but you can't kill something that is not alive. Viruses exist in a gray area between organic compounds and microbial life, if I recall correctly. They are more like bio-machines, in a sense.

In that case, DOH!
