Cancellation of 7-on-7 football will hurt, coaches say
For the first time in a generation, quarterbacks and their receivers wont get to hone their skills during summer 7-on-7 competition.
The Texas 7-on-7 tournament, which has been a rite of summer since its inception in 1997, has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Bobby Burton of 247Sports broke the news Sunday after talking with Doug Stephens, the Rowlett head coach and the Texas 7-on-7 president.
The decision came as no surprise to many involved with 7-on-7, since the states 7-on-7 organization released a statement on social media in late March that it would see what direction the UIL goes and then align ourselves with those plans.
But before this weekends announcement, area coaches and players were still holding out faint hopes that the easing of some social distancing restrictions might include 7-on-7, which holds its state tournament in late June.
