Confederate monument in downtown Huntsville vandalized
A small group of demonstrators vandalized a monument honoring Confederate soldiers on the grounds of the Walker County Courthouse late Tuesday, following multiple peaceful protests in Huntsville.
The monument was spray painted with black spray paint to cover up an engraved Confederate flag and inscription that says “In memory of our Confederate patriots 1861-1865.” County officials noted that the scene is currently under investigation, with a possible arrest pending.
The Confederate monument, which faces 11th Street, was erected in 1956 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy — in the midst of racial segregation under Jim Crow laws. It was also two years after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, which declared segregation in public schools as unconstitutional.
Tuesday’s vandalism came the same evening as other Confederate monuments and statues around the country suffered significant damage. It was also a day after Denton and Tarrant counties voted to remove similar monuments from their courthouse grounds.
