Petition aims to remove local Confederate monument in Wichita Falls

Following the removal of Confederate monuments around the United States in recent weeks, some Wichita Falls residents would like to see the removal of a local monument honoring Confederate soldiers.

An online petition to have the monument in Wichita Falls removed gained more than 400 signatures in just two days. With a goal of 500 signatures, the petition had 430 signatures as of Monday afternoon.

Constructed in 1934, the obelisk was funded by a Wichita Falls’ chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy. The inscription reads “In memory of the sons of the Southland 1861-1865.”

Another inscription on the structure states, “Let this mute but eloquent structure speak to generations to come of a generation of the past.”
