Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff issued an order Wednesday mandating that businesses require customers and employees to wear masks after Gov. Greg Abbott once again refused to allow local authorities to make the requirement mandatory for all residents.

The action that Im taking today may be pushing the legal bounds a little bit, Wolff said. But our attorneys believe we can defend this order in court.
A spokesman for Abbotts office said Wolffs workaround is all right by Abbott leaving the door open for other counties to take the same steps.
Judge Wolffs order is not inconsistent with the governors executive order, Abbott spokesman John Wittman said.
Under Wolffs order, businesses have until Monday to adopt health and safety policies that require masks for customers and workers or they risk a $1,000 fine.

Article might be behind paywall. There will be no jail time for mask violations. (Abbott stated he was against jail for mask violations..duh...so am I..It's about public health, not law and order and it's about the greater good. A few bad apples or people who cannot tolerate masks won't ruin our health) Penalties will be imposed on businesses, not consumers.

(25,272 posts)I think Bexar County's light penalty might be the key to Abbott backing down. They're only citing businesses with fines and not individuals.
