Total coronavirus cases exceed 15,000 in San Antonio; two more deaths reported

The number of diagnosed coronavirus cases in Bexar County continued to lurch upward at an alarming rate Monday, with 351 new infections and two more deaths reported.

That brings the total number of local residents who have tested positive for the virus since mid-March to 15,102. Little more than a third — 5,830 — have recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, while 1,168 patients are hospitalized here, the highest number yet.

That’s up from 881 patients in local hospitals a week ago, leaving only 12 percent of staffed hospital beds still available as of Monday night, Mayor Ron Nirenberg said.

“We are days away from overrunning our hospital system if people don’t continue to work together and slow down the infection,” he warned.

The area around Bryan/College Station has flared up with over 1% of the population and it actually worse going to the east towards Huntsville and southeast in Grimes County where over 2% of population is infected.
