Protesters arrested in downtown Austin march for Breonna Taylor

Protests erupted Wednesday night in cities across the nation, including Austin, after a grand jury declined to indict Louisville, Ky., police officers on criminal charges directly related to the death of Breonna Taylor.

Austin police put at least three people in handcuffs Wednesday night as more than a hundred protesters marched through downtown Austin from City Hall demanding justice for Taylor, a 26-year-old woman who was killed March 13 by Louisville police who had burst into her home during a botched drug raid.

Prosecutors said that two officers who fired their weapons at the unarmed Taylor were justified in using force to protect themselves. Instead, the only charges brought by the grand jury on Wednesday were three counts of wanton endangerment against fired Officer Brett Hankison for shooting into the homes of Taylor’s neighbors.

Protesters in Austin on Wednesday night could be heard chanting “Justice for Breonna Taylor” and “Austin to Louisville, fight for Breonna Taylor” throughout the night.
