Gov. Greg Abbott allows Texas bars to reopen with restrictions as COVID-19 rate stabilizes
AUSTIN Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday paved the way for a limited reopening of Texas bars, which have been hit hard by the ongoing coronavirus and COVID-19 pandemic and for months have been clamoring for relief.
"Texans have shown that we can contain the spread of COVID," Abbott said in a video posted on his official Facebook page, adding that caseloads, hospitalization rates and fatalities have "remained steady."
The guidelines governing reopening, which takes effect Oct. 14, were spelled out in a separate memo posted by the governor's office.
"County Judge of each county may choose to opt in with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to allow bars or similar establishments to operate with in-person service," the memo said.
