Amtrak has expansion within the San Antonio-Dallas-Houston triangle 'under review'
Amtrak has made significant cuts to service in response to COVID-19-related plunges in ridership, including San Antonio's daily routes, but the city remains part of its expansion talks.
Ray Lang, Amtraks senior director for national state relations, delivered a presentation to the Rail Passenger Association on Sept. 23. on expanding networks in underserved markets with help from potential programs developed through Congress.
The webinar happened 18 days before Amtrak reduced its Texas Eagle's daily service from San Antonio to Chicago to only three times a week.
During the presentation, Lang said Amtrak's network map has not grown with population shifts, such as that of Texas' Triangle, which consists of San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. Amtrak noted Texas is one of the fastest growing regions, along with Florida, where there is "very little service."
