AG officials complain of retaliation after taking Paxton allegations to FBI

In the weeks after telling FBI agents that they believed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had misused the powers of his office to help a friend and political donor, five of his top deputies claim they were subjected to retaliation, intimidation and surveillance on the job.

In formal complaints filed with the agency’s human resources department, the senior officials accused Paxton of lying to the media to impugn their character and misusing the agency’s communications department to spread those lies.

The result was an office environment that was “toxic, intolerable and extremely hostile,” as one complaint put it.

None of the complaints, however, were investigated.

According to response letters from the agency’s formal complaints officer, department policies do not contemplate formal complaints being filed by senior officials against Paxton and his new deputy, First Assistant Brent Webster.
