Lakewood Church received a $4.4 million Paycheck Protection Plan loan during the coronavirus pandemic, according to federal data. The loan was disbursed in July of this year.
U.S. Small Business Administration data, which was released at the beginning of December, showed that Lakewood Church's PPP loan was created by Bank of America. The megachurch's hefty loan was the third-largest PPP loan approved for a Houston-area entity during all of July and August, according to Chris Matthews at Houston Business Journal.
The church, like many other businesses, was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lakewood's in-person services were halted due to the pandemic, but were able to resume in October, at 25 percent capacity.
According to a statement from Lakewood spokesperson David Iloff, the church's PPP loan was used to provide support for the church's employees.

(255,538 posts)Someone brought that up to me the other day when I was complaining about the constant appearances of Joe Namath hawking Medicare insurance. But it does see really odd that I'd get those ads since I'm not remotely interested in either, LOL. But I'll have to read the whole article, fascinating - and scary! - stuff!

(255,538 posts)And I'd imagine that would be the last kind of thing that I'd be offered since the only times I've gone to church in more years than I can count were family/friends funerals.

(255,538 posts)There's just my brother, but he's agoraphobic and rarely leaves the house! And he watches '70s shows, those we watched as kids!
And that is unfortunate! I don't think any of my relatives are RWers, I'm in touch with my cousins, but those I communicate with would be comfortable on DU - and they're all in other states!

(255,538 posts)My job was to write network descriptions for the newspapers and The X-Files was one of "my" shows. I worked with CBS and FOX (the entertainment network, not FOX News). And of course I liked some shows more than others, plus there were some I made a point of watching to keep up - plus I'd sometimes get "screeners" ahead of time.
And I also do order from Amazon, but mostly for my brother who watches the old shows, Emergency! and Adam-12 are among his favorites, and anything with Robert Conrad. So that could be an influence, but he's not into religion, either - not even Father Dowling, LOL. And that was NBC.
My personal favorites were Jimmy Carter's autobiography and Mary Trump's book - and though President Carter does talk about his faith in his autobiography, it mainly talks about everything he's done in his life including his Navy career and of course details about his presidency.

I grew up going to church. All I ever saw was a gardener and an old man who came and swept and mopped. And the priest.
Lakewood Church is gargantuan, I know, and its more a business than spreading the word of God.

(4,739 posts)But I think the church I went to when I was a youngster, a modest-sized United Methodist, had more than that. They had a couple of women who worked in the office, a maintenance guy, a couple of ministers, the organist, someone who did janitorial duties. But outside of the ministers, they were part time workers. I doubt the payroll was more than a hundred grand a year total.
