Podcast: Cuellar discusses increase in migrants being released at southern border

LAREDO, Texas – Congressman Henry Cuellar held a news conference with local Webb County shelters on Friday to discuss an increase in migrant individuals released at the southern border.

The news conference went out live as a webinar on Zoom and Facebook so that Cuellar’s constituents in other parts of the district could watch. Among those on the webinar was Sister Norma Pimental of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Cuellar, D-Laredo, talked about recent conversations he held with Border Patrol and the chances of reopening U.S.-Mexico bridges to so-called “non-essential” travel.

Also on the call were Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz, the Rev. Michael Smith, executive director of the Holding Institute, Sister Rosemary Welsh, executive director of Casa de Misericordia, Javier Garcia, executive director of Bethany House, and Becky Solloa, event coordinator for Catholic Services in Laredo.
