Accomplice in Madalyn Murray O'Hair case, Gary Paul Karr, gets life sentence cut to 50 years
The sole surviving accomplice in the abduction and killings of Austin atheist activist Madalyn Murray O'Hair and her family was resentenced Friday, years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that life sentences were unconstitutional for the charges on which he'd been convicted.
Gary Paul Karr, who is in his 70s and was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair, was sentenced to about 50 years in prison after he was originally given two life sentences in 2000. He was convicted on two federal charges: conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and extortion and interstate travel to commit crime of robbery. He was never charged with murder, and he was acquitted on a kidnapping charge. The bodies were found after his trial.
The 21 years he has served so far will count toward his sentence.
O'Hair filed a lawsuit against the Baltimore school system, eventually forcing that district as well as others across America to stop Bible readings. She later settled in Austin and founded American Atheists in 1963. A 2017 Netflix original movie, "The Most Hated Woman in America," is based on the abductions and killings of O'Hair and her family.
