Senate Democrats block GOP election bills, for now

Using an obscure provision in the Texas Senate rulebook, Democratic senators blocked consideration of five Republican voting bills at a Capitol committee hearing Monday.

By putting a temporary bump in the road, the Democrats signaled their strong opposition to bills they say are designed to make it harder to cast ballots in Texas, particularly for young and minority voters who tend to support Democrats.

Republicans insist the bills are meant to improve election integrity by cracking down on opportunities for election fraud.

The Democrats delayed action by "tagging" the bills, saying they were not provided with written notice of Monday's public hearing at the State Affairs Committee within 48 hours.
