New Beto O'Rourke ad puts Gov. Greg Abbott in hot seat over energy company campaign donations

Democratic Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke continues to aggressively take Gov. Greg Abbott to task for his handling of last year’s winter storm that knocked out power for millions and killed at least 246 Texans. O’Rourke kicked off the first day of early voting for the primary election Monday with a new ad attacking the Republican leader, saying Texans are paying higher utility bills as a result of the power grid failure.

O'Rourke also calls out Abbott for accepting campaign donations from utility companies that made huge profits from the lack of electricity during the 2021 winter freeze. The former Texas Congressman specifically pointed to a $1 million donation from Energy Transfer executive chairman Kelcy Warren.

“Why did Greg Abbott not fix the grid?” O’Rourke says in the ad, released on the one-year anniversary of the winter storm. “They paid him not to fix the grid. Instead of asking you to pay $20 to $50 more per month for your utility bills, we’re going to get that money back from the profit makers and the highway robbers and send it back to you so that we can always keep the lights on.”

O’Rourke also recently launched his statewide “Keeping the Lights On" tour focused on honoring lives lost during the winter storm and outlining his plans for fixing the state grid.

The one recent cold spell didn't last long enough to be noticeable. People will take notice in July - September when they compare the bill for this year with the bill from last year.

The other bill that went up significantly is the cable/Ibternet bill which went from $161 to $194 a couple months ago. That particular increase was due to one of Abbott's miscues. Therefore, the Abbott tax is adding about $80 a month to the expenses of many households.
