Dallas church could face fine, lawsuit from city after concert shooting that killed 1, injured 16
The church that owns the land where one person was killed and 16 were injured in a shooting at an outdoor concert this month could be fined up to $2,000 and face a lawsuit from the city as officials crack down on landowners and promoters of unpermitted events.
Chris Caso, Dallas’ city attorney, said Monday at the City Council’s public safety meeting that the lawsuit could prevent property owners from holding events there in the future. St. John Missionary Baptist Church, which owns the land in southeast Oak Cliff, has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
Caso said city officials are exploring options for new ordinances to hold event promoters accountable after the April 2 shooting in the 5000 block of Cleveland Road. The promoters did not have a permit for the event. Event organizer Bossman Bubba released a statement saying the promoters were “saddened by the unfortunate events,” but he has not replied to requests for comment.
“Hopefully with the recent tragic events, a lot of property owners will not take the calls from the promoters,” Caso said. “But if they do and they violate [city ordinances], then we’ll prosecute them.”
